Dylan Larkin Left the Rangers Off His Trade List, and That Should Sting More Than the Losing Skid

Dylan Larkin wants out of Detroit badly enough to forfeit $41,000 a day to make it happen. He told the Red Wings he’s done playing until a trade gets done, and Detroit suspended him without pay for it this week.

He also handed Detroit a list of the only teams he’d approve a deal to. Ten of them: Vegas, Minnesota, Florida, Colorado, Washington, Dallas, Utah, Carolina, New Jersey, Tampa Bay.

The Rangers aren’t on it.

That should bother you more than the skid does.

SI’s Rangers site called the omission surprising given how badly this roster needs exactly what Larkin is. Igor Shesterkin is out for the year. Dylan Garand has played well behind him, which is the one piece of good news in all this. But center has been a hole on this roster for years, the sort that gets name-checked every deadline and never gets filled. A top-line center looking for a fresh start should be an easy pitch for a team with that problem. Instead, New York got passed over for a list that found room for Utah.

None of this is about blaming the front office for not having Larkin yet. Teams miss on trades for a dozen boring reasons: term, cap fit, a list that got drawn up before anyone even picked up the phone. That part is fair.

The list itself is harder to wave away. Larkin had his pick of the league and put nine other addresses ahead of this one.

Larkin isn’t hiding why he’s done waiting on Detroit, either.

Six months of patience since his May trade request, and he decided that was enough. Red Wings GM Shawn Horcoff isn’t pretending the return is simple on his end.

A list with Washington on it and New York off it doesn’t make Horcoff’s job any easier. It just confirms the Rangers were never part of the conversation to begin with.

J.T. Miller wears the captain’s letter now, and none of this is on him. He didn’t draw up the center depth chart. He just has to answer for it after every loss, and there have been five of them in the last six games while Garand gets his footing under him.

Larkin is sitting at home right now, unpaid, waiting on a trade to a team he actually wants. The Rangers are stuck watching a center who needs exactly what they’re missing pick almost anywhere else first.
