After today's practice, Alain Vigneault announced that while Henrik Lundqvist will get the start tomorrow night against the Avalanche, Cam Talbot will start one of the final two games before the Olympic break.
Those two games are Thursday against the Oilers and Friday at Pittsburgh.
...if I were a betting man, I'd put all my money on Talbot starting vs. the Oilers.
Vigneault added that because he expects Lundqvist to get a large Olympic workload, Talbot will be counted on in March.
Vigneault is hoping Talbot will end up with around 20 appearances this season. Talbot currently has 16 up until this point.
After the Olympic break, the Rangers have one game in February, 16 in March and 6 in April.
…so it looks like the post Sochi breakdown will be about twelve starts for Lundqvist and five for Talbot in February and March. Obviously, unless the Rangers have a playoff spot and seed locked up going into the final month of the season (doubtful), Lundqvist will likely get all six April starts.
…the hectic March schedule makes Talbot's presence this season that much more important. The Rangers playoff aspirations would be severely hampered if they were forced to solely lean on Lundqvist down the stretch after a large Olympic workload.
