Stepan to Have Surgery on Broken Jaw, Status Unknown

Alain Vigneault confirmed today that Derek Stepan broke his jaw on the Brandon Prust hit last night and will require surgery…

“Step right now, at this time, is probably getting operated on. He broke his jaw yesterday, so we’ll have an idea of the time frame tomorrow”

The Rangers will know more about his status after the surgery.

…stunned. I still think the principle point of contact was the chest, but obviously the chin received a brunt of the impact as well. I wonder how this will factor into the NHL’s decision to suspend Prust. I’d think the number of games has to be upped after hearing this news.

…to the loss of Stepan, this his a huge blow. Not only is he currently riding a five game scoring streak (1g, 7a), but he’s had some nice chemistry with Kreider recently. His absence puts the line-up in an even more dire position after the Carcillo suspension. Thankfully Brassard should be back on Sunday, but Miller is going to be relied on heavily for the remainder of the series.

…btw, I never want to hear anyone question the toughness of this guy after playing with a broken jaw last night. He even had the guts to throw this hit after breaking it…

…wonder if Prust thinks his hit was “accidentally on purpose”? What a….

H/T to reader Sal for the Prust message.
