Brett Cyrgalis at the New York Post reports that late last night Martin St. Louis was informed that his mother had unexpectedly passed away yesterday afternoon.
The availability of St. Louis for tonight’s Game 5 against the Penguins at Consol Energy Center is unknown.
…first off, my sympathies to St. Louis and his entire family as it obviously can’t be easy to lose your mother.
…which is why I’m not expecting nor think that St. Louis should play tonight. That’s a traumatic experience especially with it being so unexpected. No one should have to worry about anything other than being with their family when a loved one passes away. Hockey is just a game, death is real life.
…having said that, there is precedence for an athlete not only playing the day after a parent tragically passes away but succeeding as Brett Favre threw for 399 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-7 victory over Oakland on Monday night football just 24-hours after learning his father had died of a heart attack. Sometimes getting your mind off the situation is the best medicine.
