Sharks 1, Rangers 0

Box Score

Tough luck loss. Give credit to Antti Niemi and his 41 saves. Came up huge in the face of pressure during the first period. Rangers showed that they are capable of playing up to one of the best teams in the league. Just couldn’t finish.

The Rangers outplayed San Jose for most of, if not all of the first and came out firing 20 shots on Niemi right out of the gate. Brassard had two golden chances himself, the latter chance had him looking to the rafters.

Going straight to the disallowed goal on Hagelin’s wraparound attempt late in the second period. Say what you want about the NHL, the abhorrent officiating this season and the general inconsistency amongst the refs enforcing the various rule changes. There was no clear shot of the puck crossing the goal line nor was there evidence of the puck being behind the post in the first place. Was it in? Probably, but there wasn’t a chance that Toronto was going to overturn that.

What will be found first? The Rangers power play this season, or the missing Malaysian Airliner…. I know what my money is on.

Remember when Lundqvist could stop breakaways? The Rangers could’ve used one on their second power play in the first period. Zuccarello had his pocket picked at center ice by Logan Couture and Richards’ back pressure wasn’t enough to force Couture off the puck.

MSG starting the Steven McDonald extra effort award voting…. might as well give it to McDonagh. No one else really deserves that honor. Zuccarello has a case, but is a distant second in my opinion.

Speaking of McDonagh, another 6 shots on goal today. #Norris

I’m going to question AV’s thinking as to why he left St.Louis on the bench during the final few seconds of the game, which in itself was embarassing given the Rangers struggled to hold onto the puck to allow Lundqvist to get to the bench for the extra skater. Even if St.Louis was invisible for most of the game, why not get all of your offensive weapons on the ice for a quick last second goal?

This latest losing streak has put the Rangers in jeopardy of missing out on the playoffs altogether now with Columbus and Philadelphia a point ahead of them with 2 games in hand. Detroit is 3 points behind the Rangers with 3 games in hand with one game tonight against the Blackhawks. With just 13 games left, the Rangers need to find their pre-Olympic game ASAP. Next game is on Tuesday up in Ottawa.
