As part of a mandatory exchange of offers 48-hours ahead of an arbitration hearing, Elliotte Friedman at Hockey Night in Canada reports that Chris Kreider has requested a $2.8 million per year deal, while the Rangers initially offered a two-year $1.9 million contract before upping it to $2.2 million per.
The Rangers currently have $12.3 million remaining under the cap to re-sign Kreider, Derrick Brassard, Mats Zuccarello and John Moore.
…so $2.5 million per and everyone is happy? If Kreider breaks out the way we all hope he does this season, his contract will be a steal next season. The real battle could be when this bridge contract is over in two years and Kreider is still a RFA. Likely looking at Stepan Part II.
…unfortunately, because of their cap situation, the Rangers really can’t afford to sign Kreider to a longer deal at more money, which they might end up paying for, as I mention above, when this bridge deal would be over.
…a $2.5 million deal would leave the Rangers with $9.8 million to re-sign the remaining three RFAs, which is going to be very tight when you expect Zucc to get around $4M per, Brassard about $4.5M per and John Moore just over $1 million per.
