Rangers Signed Czech Defenseman Petr Zámorský

The New York Rangers have signed defenseman Petr Zámorský, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.

Zámorský, who will be 22 by next season’s training camp, had seven goals and 11 assists in 44 games with HC Zlin of the Czech Extraliga, earning the league’s “Best Defenseman” award for this season. He also played for the Czech Republic at the World Championships, registering three assists in 10 games.

Without having ever seen him play, here are some very basic thoughts. The Rangers were not at all happy with how the Hartford Wolf Pack’s defense looked this past season, so this is yet another addition to what is going to look like a very different defense in Hartford next season (unless he makes the Rangers, of course). He’s a right-handed shot with some offensive upside; something the Rangers clearly lack both at the NHL level and in their prospect pool. A quick Youtube search also reveals a willingness to dish out some big hits, though he’s going to have to learn to keep his hands down.

Here’s an awkward but efficient shootout goal he scored back in January.
