Rangers Sign Free Agent McCarthy

The Rangers announced yesterday that they have agreed to terms with University of Vermont free agent forward Chris McCarthy.

The 6-1, 205-pound McCarthy, 22, registered 18 goals and 24 assists for 42 points, along with 12 penalty minutes and a plus-16 rating in 38 games this season. He was also the team’s captain

McCarthy played 59 games for the U.S. National Team Development Program during 2008-09, with 11 goals and 19 assists.

According to Katie Strang at, McCarthy’s contract will not begin this season as the Rangers are at the 50-contract max. He will sign an ATO and play in Hartford.

Here’s a profile on McCarthy from last season…

And here’s highlights of a two goal game, including the tying goal late in the third, he had back in January against defending National Champion Yale…

Since I’ve never watched a second of this kid play, here’s an observation from a TheNYRBlog reader who has…

…with the Rangers trading away their second round pick this season (would turn into first round pick if they make it to Conference Finals) and first round pick next season, it makes sense that Sather is being very aggressive signing college free agents. While the Rangers don’t have a choice as they’re at the team contract limit, I’m happy to hear he’ll be headed to Hartford to get a few pro games under his belt before the end of the season. It’s too bad they were forced to accommodate Haggerty’s wishes to keep him on the NHL roster. While I’m sure he’ll learn a lot practicing with NHL talent, I think Haggerty’s development would be better served learning the pro game while actually, you know, playing.

…i am loving that Sather seems to be targeting big, physical forwards as both McCarthy and Haggerty are over 6 foot, 200 pounds.

now Sather just needs to go out and sign Swedish defensive phenom Christian Folin out of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell and he’ll have cornered the market on college free agents. Folin played for Lundqvist’s old team in Frolunda, so Sather has a nice little recruiting tool to help get this kid on board. Folin signed with the Wild this morning.
