Rangers Pay Tribute To Steven McDonald With “Above & Beyond” Motto In The Playoffs

During the presentation of the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award to Mats Zuccarello before the start of the Rangers final home game this season, New York City Police Officer McDonald, who the award is named after, had a message for Alain Vigneault and his team…

“The other night we were reminded what it means to perform above and beyond the call of duty when two of my brother/sister New York City police officers were overcome by flames and smoke and were saved by members of the FDNY.  So, coach Vigneault and the Rangers, just remember that. What it means to perform above and beyond for the next two months.”

Well, it sounds like the Rangers took that message to heart…

Here’s Brad Richards after yesterday’s Game 1 victory putting the first piece of the Stanley Cup on the “Above & Beyond: Earn It” board…

The annual Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award recognizes the player who performs “above and beyond the call of duty.”

…i eff’n love this stuff. Brings a real sense of team and camaraderie.

…if last night was any indication, I’d say the Rangers heard Officer McDonald’s message loud and clear.

…let’s see, Rangers motto pays homage to a great hero, while the Flyers was inspired by a washed-up R&B singer. No wonder the Rangers dominated last night.
