The New York Rangers (40-29-4) defeated the Phoenix Coyotes (34-26-12) by the score of 4-3 in overtime, tonight. For a box score, go to Yahoo! Sports.
…the previous two games the Rangers showed passion, toughness and intensity, whelp, I guess we can add resiliency to the list of adjectives to describe this team as that was as gutty an effort as you’re going to see after the Rangers fought back from a slow start with basically 10 forwards.
…just give McDonagh the “C”, the Norris, hell, give him my wife. The guy is a force out there right now and it’s a privilege to watch. McDonagh now has 42 points on the season, which is the most by a Rangers defenseman since Tom Poti (LOL!) in 2003 (H/T Adam).
…and if McDonagh’s performance wasn’t enough, Girardi proved why those two are one of the best defensive tandems in the NHL.
…big time props to the fourth line for being the only ones not mesmerized the first 20 minutes of the game by the Gibson guitar Lundqvist was presented during the painfully too long pre-game ceremony.
…despite my critique of the Lundqvist ceremony, he deserved every second of it. What he didn’t deserve was the defensive effort in front of him during the first period.
…how does Brassard not get the first star of the game after not only scoring, but taking Mike Smith out?
…have I ever mentioned good things happen when you go to the net? Especially loved the aggressiveness of the defensemen in the Phoenix zone.
…while I appreciate Stepan and St. Louis sucking it up tonight, they had no business being on the ice. Could have easily cost them.
…tough night for Kreider who really tried to exert himself physically early, but as has been the case more often then not, he misses the net on a wide open opportunity, the puck goes back the other way, he can’t make the defensive play in his zone and ends up on the end of the bench in the third period.
…it was like two different teams on defense tonight. In the first period they basically allowed Phoenix to skate circles around them, but once the Rangers defensemen began forcing the play in the offensive zone it put the Coyotes back on their heels and they really didn’t threaten offensively for the remainder of the game.
…is it me, or did the officials double up on awful tonight.
…bitter sweet night as Sean Avery was eliminated from Dancing With The Stars.
…Richards played like he’s back together with Olivia Munn tonight. That between the legs shot was ridiculous.
…eight third period goals in the last four games says all you need to know about the character of this team right now. I don’t care how hot Philly is, if the Rangers can carry this kind of effort into the playoffs they will be a team no one wants to face.
…speaking of Philly, should be a raucous scene at the Garden Wednesday night.
Post game talk…
