Prospect Camp Day 1 Highlights

Before I get to the insanity that is Day 1 of free agency, I figured I’d start the day with some video, interviews and recaps from Day 1 of the Rangers prospect camp.

Obviously the highlight of the day was the scrimmage…

…really not much to take out of a 1:30 highlight package, except that this year’s second round pick Brandon Halverson didn’t exactly look like Brodeur handling the puck on that first goal.

Speaking of Halverson, he discussed the camp and his first time in New York…

Here’s some video of Halverson taking shots before the scrimmage…

Also speaking after the scrimmage was 2012 first round pick Brady Skjei…

…damn, Skjei looks yoked up. Kid’s been hitting the gym big time.

…Skjei had 6g, 8a in 40 games last year and received a ton of big time pressure experience in the World Juniors and Frozen Four which should help prepare him mentally for the rigors of the NHL.

…i thought the end of the interview was very interesting. I always anticipated that Skjei would be going back to Minnesota for his junior season, but his response to a question about his time frame to be with the Rangers has me re-thinking that conclusion:

“I’m just weighing my options right now. No time frame. We’ll see what happens.”

To even further muddy the waters about his future Skjei added this to Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record

“Gordie [Clark, the Rangers director of player personnel] has told me he thinks I’m ready. But I’m still thinking. It’s tough, but I think one more year of development would only help me.”

…doesn’t surprise me that Gordie would be pushing Skjei to leave school early as I’m sure he wants to get the 2012 1st round pick under the organization’s umbrella to develop him the way that best suits the Rangers.

Speaking of Clark, he also gave his thoughts on the draft and what the organization is expecting from their prospects this week…

I had wondered yesterday why 2012 second round pick Boo Nieves wasn’t participating in the development cap, whelp here’s the answer…

After the scrimmage, Pat Leonard at the Daily News offered some observations.
