In a fairly lengthy interview this morning posted by Aaron Portzline for the Columbus Dispatch, Rick Nash was asked about his time in Columbus among other subjects. But at the very end of the interview, Portzline asked Nash about what he thinks about the vacant Rangers captaincy bid and whether he would have interest in the job.
“Nash: (laughs) Oh, no. They have a great defenseman here, Ryan McDonagh. He’s on a long-term deal. He’s one of the best defensemen in the league, one of the hardest guys to play against. I think he’s the leading candidate.”
Nash did go on to say that if he was offered the gig, he would accept it.
Here’s your confirmation from inside the locker room on who the majority of the fans think should fill the void as next captain. The way McDonagh has carried himself on the ice and his behavior off the it in media interviews and the like, makes him the obvious candidate to fill that void. Once if/when McDonagh is given the letter, hopefully the transition is as effortless as it was for Callahan before him and the weight of wearing the ‘C’ doesn’t negatively impact his play.
Thank you again, Bob Gainey.
