It’s been a tough 15 hours since the Rangers demoralizing 1-0 loss to the Sharks last night, but here’s a little something to brighten your day as Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal (H/T Kuklas Korner) is hearing that Glen Sather could retire at the end of the season if the Rangers make the playoffs.
Matheson added that Sather had no response to the rumors.
…don’t tease me.
…wait, he’s going to STAY if they DON’T make the playoffs?!?!?! It’s official, this is the hardest I will ever root for this franchise to qualify for the post season.
…for those of us completely frustrated with the lack of direction and success under the “leadership” of Sather this gives us a glimmer of hope for a much better future.
…listen, the guy knows how to make a trade and negotiate with his own free agents, but his propensity to grossly overpay UFAs has been a major deterrent in the Rangers quest to be a perennial Stanley Cup contender. Instead of acquiring players who complement or build on what was working, he just threw a truckload of money at the biggest free agent whether that player fit into the current system or not.
…his biggest failure is no doubt the complete turnover of the 2011-12 team. There are just 10 holdovers from a squad that was in the Eastern Conference Finals less than two years ago. That’s just disgraceful.
…similar to what happened to the Blackhawks organization once incompetent owner Bill Witz passed away, my hope is that if Sather leaves, it’ll lift the black cloud that has been hovering over this franchise since his arrival.
…have to assume Jeff Gorton is the likely successor, but Messier, if bridges haven’t been completely burned, is obviously still out there.
