In a very surprising development, Ryan Callahan has decided forego free agency and instead signed an extension to stay in Tampa Bay…
Ryan Callahan’s extension comes in at $34.8M over six years. His $5.8M AAV is second only to Steven Stamkos on #TBLightning.

Callahan also received a partial no trade clause from Tampa, which was the breaking off point between him and the Rangers.
Because Callahan has re-signed with Tampa, the Rangers will receive a 2015 second round pick from the Lightning to complete the trade for Martin St. Louis.
…with Florida not having a state income tax, Callahan will basically be making the six year, $6.25M per he was asking for from the Rangers.
…other than Callahan no longer playing in the greatest city in the world, in front of the greatest fans in the world it looks like both he and the Rangers made out in the end. He gets paid and the Rangers ended up in the Stanley Cup Final.
…Tampa on the other hand looks like a big loser as they not only have to watch the franchise’s greatest player compete for a Stanley Cup with another organization, they now have to overpay an injury prone, 40 point per year player merely to save face.
…while Callahan is still a greedy bastard, he earned a little respect back in my book by staying with a winning organization rather than initiating a bidding war in free agency and ending up in a disaster of a situation in Buffalo.
