Blue Jackets Scouting Rangers, Callahan

Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that the Columbus Blue Jackets dispatched two scouts to Madison Square Garden on Thursday and to Pittsburgh on Friday night to watch the Rangers.

Last week, it was reported that Blueshirt representatives were in attendance at two Blue Jackets games.

Columbus has been rumored to be interested in Ryan Callahan.

Brooks says "you’re not being realistic" if you believe it’s out of the question that Callahan could rejoin former teammates Brandon Dubinsky and Artem Anisimov in Columbus.

Apparently one of those people who are unrealistic is Columbus Blue Jackets President John Davidson, who recently noted that Columbus is not looking for short term fixes (via Columbus Dispatch)…

“If we’re going to do something, it’s going to be something to help us long term,” Davidson said. “I know, it’s getting repetitive. But that’s where we are.

“We’re not doing rentals because the price is too high. It’s not worth doing,” Davidson said. “We like our team.”

Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch adds that Callahan does not seem like a fit in Columbus.

According to Pat Leonard at the Daily News, the Blue Jackets have not reached out to Callahan's agent about a contract extension.

…hmmmm, let me think, who should I believe about the Blue Jackets trade deadline plans, Larry Brooks or Columbus President John Davidson? I know Brooks has some contacts, but his Callahan proclamation seems more about selling papers than reporting actual facts.

…having said that, even if Callahan isn't the focus, there's obviously something going on between the two clubs with the amount of scouting going on. The Rangers don't play the Blue Jackets again until March 21st, so I very much doubt they're building an advanced report on each other just yet.

…ever since Columbus was first mentioned as a possible suitor for Callahan, I have studied their roster and farm system, and for the life of me I can't imagine who the Rangers might be interested in that the Blue Jackets would be willing to move. Guys like Horton, Johansen and Murray have to be off limits, while I very much doubt Sather is looking to bring any former Rangers back to MSG. That really only leaves Atkinson (please, no more smurfs), Jenner (raw with upside) and Jack Johnson (insurance for Girardi?) as realistic targets. If I'm missing someone, please let me know in the comments section.

…although, I bet a healthy Gaborik would look pretty sweet in AV's offensive system.
