Vigneault: Lundqvist Needs to Be Better

After yet another Rangers debacle last night, Alain Vigneault seemed to be happy with the Rangers defensive effort, which only allowed eight scoring chances. Unfortunately, the Devils scored on four of them, leading the Rangers head coach to say this about his All World goaltender…

“I’m sure if you ask him that he knows he can be better than what he has shown. He needs to be better. From the short time I have been with him I know that he is a true professional, he had a great game in Washington, a great practice and is a hard worker and that is what we will do. We need a better push back when the other team scores the first or second goal against.”

He later reiterated that Lundqvist "can be better."

Lundqvist owned up to his poor play as well (via Blueshirts United)…

“It starts with me. I have to be better, give confidence to the group. I didn't stop enough pucks.”

…assuming the last thing Vigneault figured he'd have to worry about coming to the Rangers was the goaltending. He just left a disaster of a situation in Vancouver and now this. He must be like "WTF." Bottom line with the Rangers, if Lundqvist isn't on his game this team has no chance. So he needs to figure this out and figure it out fast.

…to the statement, I'm not so sure I like the idea of AV calling out Hank in the media. It's bad enough the Rangers poor play likely already has Lundqvist planning his escape route, now he has his head coach publicly critiquing him? Not good.

…although, if Lundqvist keeps playing like this, I doubt anyone will want him.

Here's Vigneault's entire press conference…

Lundqvist didn't look good on any of the goals but this one by Adam Henrique was easily the worst…
