According to Katie Strang at ESPN.com, Derek Stepan, who held out for the second straight day to open training camp, and the Rangers continue to communicate on a new contract, however, they still remain far apart on the terms.
I think the Rangers betting odds this season just got worse.
Ryan McDonagh, who signed a 6-year, $28.2 million contract this summer, has been in constant contact with Stepan and is confident something will get done.
Yesterday, RFA F Nazem Kadri re-signed with Toronto for 2-years, $5.8 million, while another RFA F Cody Hodgson re-signed with the Sabres for 6-years, $25.5 million.
…i know I expected this to drag on during camp, but now that it has I'm a little concerned. I still think something gets done, but the two polar opposite deals for Kadri and Hodgson most likely muddied the water between the two sides even more. Ultimately, I think Stepan gives in and signs the bridge deal.
…my main worry isn't so much the price tag or length of the contract, it's how far behind the eight ball Stepan gets by missing an extended period of camp with a new coach. We all saw what happened to Richards last year, so it can be detrimental to a player's success. And with Callahan and Hagelin already expected to miss the first month of the season, having a less than full strength Stepan could be disastrous.
