According to Steve Zipay at Newsday both Ryan Callahan (knee) and Marc Staal (concussion) will join the Rangers on their five-game road trip starting in Washington tonight.
Callahan is still two weeks away from returning, while no timetable has been given for Staal who has skated for the last four days.
…i like the idea of 2/3 of the Rangers leadership traveling with the team as they embark on an important road trip. The team has been playing better of late, so anything to help keep this thing rolling in the right direction sounds good to me.
…while the battle level has been much higher the last few games, getting Callahan back in the lineup as soon as possible would be a huge lift. Although, with how well the team has been playing lately, it could be a difficult decision for AV on who comes out. Right now, my choice would be Richards. However, I have a sneaking suspicion it'll be Miller.
Meanwhile, Larry Brooks at the New York Post feels that when Staal returns, Michael Del Zotto will likely be headed to the press box.
Brooks adds that Rangers management has all but settled on dealing Del Zotto, but they need to make a decision on a return package as their current asking price of a top four defenseman does not seem realistic at this point.
Brooks notes that if Del Zotto is dealt before Staal returns, because of the knee injury to Dylan McIlrath (will be reevaluated in a week), the Blueshirts will likely recall Connor Allen from Hartford.
…man these Del Zotto trade rumors have dragged on. I really hope he gets moved once the roster freeze is lifted tomorrow, just so I can stop blogging about it. And unfortunately, if Sather doesn't drop his asking price, the crazy talk will persist as Del Zotto isn't going anywhere.
…although, I do like hearing that Allen would be the likely callup if Del Zotto is dealt. He looked NHL ready during the preseason, so he's probably that much more prepared after almost a half season in the AHL.
