Return of Staal Will Hopefully Bring Return of McD’s Offense

From October 29th through December 7th, Ryan McDonagh totaled 5g, 11a and was a +5. Since then, the Rangers defenseman has gone scoreless with just four assists and is a -6.

So what happened on December 7th? I'll give you a little reminder…

Yes, since Marc Staal went out with a concussion, it seems like McDonagh's offense went out with him.

Alain Vigneault explains the correlation (via New York Post)…

“When you’ve got Mac and you don’t have Marc, Mac logs a lot of minutes. I think what we do, five-on-five, is we lose a little bit of his offensive potential.”

…sometimes you forget how much a player's injury can impact a specific teammate. It makes complete sense that McDonagh's offensive output would decrease while having to focus more on the defensive end to make up for the deficiencies of guys like Del Zotto and Moore who are given more responsibilities than Vigneault would probably want while Staal is out of the lineup.

…now that Staal's back, let's hope McDonagh is able to regain his offensive touch, because right now the Rangers are getting absolutely nothing offensively from the blueline.
