According to Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record, the Rangers will extend qualifying offers to restricted free agents (RFA) Ryan McDonagh, Derek Stepan, Carl Hagelin and Mats Zuccarello by Tuesday’s deadline.
All NHL teams must extend a "qualifying offer" to RFAs to retain negotiating rights to that player. If they don't by the deadline, the player becomes an unrestricted free agent. A player can reject the qualifying offer, but will remain a RFA.
According to the Cap Geek Qualifying Offer Calculator, here are the minimum qualifying offers for each player…
Derek Stepan – $826,875
Ryan McDonagh – $826,875
Carl Hagelin – $660,000
Mats Zuccarello – $735,000
…no surprise here as previous reports have stated the Rangers are interested in re-signing all four. However, there is no way any of the four would accept qualifying offers that low.
…with the decision to retain Richards, I was wondering if there was a possibility the Rangers don't re-sign Zuccarello to save some cap space, but it looks like they want him back.
