The one name that is constantly thrown around in trade rumors involving the Rangers is Michael Del Zotto, so it's no surprise to hear Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun report that Glen Sather is shopping the embattled defenseman. However, Garrioch also notes that the Rangers could also be dangling another defenseman…Dan Girardi.
Garrioch adds that with Girardi a UFA this coming offseason, Sather might merely be exploring what they could get for the underachieving defenseman if the Rangers decide they'd rather not re-sign him.
In regards to Del Zotto, Garrioch says scouts who have watched him aren't impressed and are offering negative reports to their GMs.
League executives have told Garrioch that Sather has been working the phones trying to move several players and only Rick Nash, Henrik Lundqvist and Chris Kreider are untouchable.
…as always, take Garrioch's rumors with a grain of salt, but it's not impossible to believe Sather is offering up everyone on his team other than McDonagh and the guys mentioned. And to be honest, if Sather could find a taker for Nash and that albatross contract, I absolutely think he has to make that trade. One thing the Rangers GM won't do is sit on his hands. If he sees a trade that'll make the Rangers better, he won't hesitate. And with how things are going, I'd pretty much endorse any move Sather makes, if for no other reason than to shake this team up.
…Girardi's fate is likely tied to AV's future with the Rangers. If Sather decides he's going to build a team with players who should thrive in AV's system then Girardi's gone, but if Sather lets his new head coach take the fall for this debacle, I could see Girardi being re-signed.
…also not surprising to hear that Del Zotto is turning off scouts. He's been horrific as the turnovers continue to mount, while the goal scoring column remains stagnant. Del Zotto's trade value was likely at its highest when he was sitting in the press box.
Meanwhile, Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that the Canadiens are willing to trade 25-year old winger Max Pacioretty and the Rangers are interested.
Unfortunately, Brooks notes that the likely asking price is McDonagh (Del Zotto will not be enough), who, as I mentioned above, isn't going anywhere.
Pacioretty, who is in the first year of a six-year deal worth $4.5M annually, has 15g, 4a on the season. The Rangers leading goal scorer is Brad RIchards with just nine.
…despite Brooks' claim, I find it very hard to believe the Canadiens are seriously looking to trade their top scorer, who they only re-signed a year ago and is just entering his prime.
…having said that, we all know Sather has fleeced the Canadiens once, any chance he can turn another underachieving, cap busting, center into a second young, dynamic, cap friendly player?
…and besides scoring, Pacioretty has the ability to mix it up which Rangers fans should be well aware of…
