Katie Strang at ESPN.com reports that the Rangers have not sought permission to speak with former Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff and that there is some doubt whether they will even pursue him as an option.
…i'm not the biggest Ruff fan as, despite his one Cup run, his Buffalo teams missed the playoffs about 50% of the time. Having said that, man did his Sabres team led by Drury and Briere light it up offensively between 2005-07, which is something I think every Rangers fan would love to see. Not so sure how Lundqvist would enjoy the zero defense those team played though.
…a bit surprised Sather hasn't at least reached out to him yet. Definitely worth bringing him in.
Another coach Rangers fans have been clamoring about is Coyotes head man Dave Tippett. However, Strang says Coyotes GM Don Maloney told her that Phoenix plans on re-signing him.
Maloney wouldn't elaborate on whether the Rangers asked to speak with Tippett, but he did confirm that he would not give that permission to "any such request."
…i guess if you were a Tippett fan, I'd get that idea out of your head now.
One name I've seen thrown around by Rangers fans is former Lightning coach Guy Boucher who Gary Shelton at the Tampa Bay Time basically says has all the good qualities of John Tortorella minus all the bad ones…
"Boucher is more cerebral. His voice is measured, and his strategies are meticulously plotted. As near as anyone can tell, he doesn't have a doghouse. If his voice gets loud, he says, it is because it is so darned hard to hear on the bench. If his eyes get wide, he says, it is because of the urgency of his message. Honestly, he says, he hasn't been ticked off, really ticked off, in months."
…Torts' relentless drive to win minus the baggage? Hey, I think I like this guy.
…atrocious goaltending was a big reason for Tampa's decline these last two years, and the last time I checked, the Rangers are pretty good in that area.
H/T to reader Bob G. for Boucher article.
