With Henrik Lundqvist stating that he doesn't want contract extension negotiations to become a distraction during the season, this week might be the last chance for a deal to get done before next offseason.
Which is why Lundqvist says there will be discussions this week (via Newsday)…
“I don’t have anything for you,” Lundqvist said with a smile. “We still have a few days. You can get back to me. We’ll be talking before we leave for Phoenix (on Wednesday).”
…now that Stepan is signed, the Rangers focus all this week should be on extending Lundqvist. Because if this drags on through the season and the Rangers struggle, it'll become that much less likely "The King" will want to return to his throne on Broadway next season.
…having said that, Sather needs to be smart and not just open the vault for the All World goaltender. I've seen rumors stating that Lundqvist is going to end up making between $8.5 and $9 million, which is insane even for him. The Rangers GM did a masterful job re-signing all his RFAs, not let's see what he can do with his first UFA.
