For the second time in two days, the Rangers are rumored to be actively looking to make a trade as Elliotte Friedman at Hockey Night in Canada reports that the Blueshirts are one of three teams "doing the most exploring."
…with it becoming more and more apparent that Nash (concussion) isn't going to be returning anytime soon, I have to assume Sather is looking for some scoring depth. The only two teams that I've heard are willing to dump salary are the Sabres and Panthers. And after perusing those rosters, there are two guys on the Panthers I'd absolutely be interested in if I was the Rangers. The first is Kris Versteeg. The 27-year old Versteeg is a proven point getter as he has 209 points (92g, 117a) in 340 NHL games. He also has 37 points (14g, 23a) in 57 playoffs games, including 6g, 8a for the Blackhawks when they won the Stanley Cup back in 2010. Versteeg, who missed virtually all of last season due to knee surgery, does come with a heavy price tag of $4.4M per till 2016.
…the other player is Brad Boyes. A former 40-goal scorer, who had a bit of a renaissance with the Islanders last season, Boyes, 31, signed a one-year, $1M contract with the Panthers this offseason and has 4g, 2a in nine games this year.
…i mentioned this on Sunday, but the only guy on the Sabres (Rangers scouts attended their last game) I would be interested in is Ott. He has that agitating style that could really energize this team. But that's more of a complementary move.
…i can't imagine it would cost more than a late round pick for any of these guys and maybe Sather can get a desperate Panthers GM Dale Tallon to pick up a portion of Versteeg's salary just to get most of his cap hit off the books.
…having said all that. I really don't think now is the time to make a panic move. I'd give this team at least two more weeks before I'm even thinking about making a trade.
