As of this afternoon, Brad Richards has not been contacted by the Rangers regarding a possible buyout. Larry Brooks at the New York Post says one of the reasons could be that the Blueshirts are waiting to see the pool of players that are being bought out by other teams…
"There is a sense that the Rangers would prefer not to exercise the buyout but want to retain the option in case a player becomes unexpectedly available to them leading up to July 4 and the club would thus need to free up Richards’ cap space in order to add him."
Some of the players whose team have announced they will be bought out are Vinny Lecavalier, Danny Briere and Rostislav Olesz.
…this is actually a very smart strategy by Sather. If he can't find a suitable replacement for Richards, I think they end up keeping him. However, with names like Lecavalier and Briere already out there it's probably more likely he could be on his way out.
…again, while I'm leaning towards wanting Richards bought out this season, it has everything to with his contract and the risk of injury not allowing the Rangers to amnesty him next season. It has nothing to do with his performance last season as I am confident he will come back this year motivated to prove his detractors wrong.
