Rangers Add More Defensive Depth; Lose Out on Tolchinsky

The Rangers offseason of stockpiling defensemen in their system continued last week when the Hartford Wolfpack signed 26-year old defenseman Brendon Nash to an American Hockey League contract.

In 2012-13, the 26-year-old Nash had totals of six goals and 13 assists for 19 points, along with 55 PIM and a +11, in 54 games of AHL action for the Hamilton Bulldogs, San Antonio Rampage and Charlotte Checkers.

Because he signed an AHL contract, Nash will not count towards the Rangers limit of 50 contracts. They are currently at 48 without Derek Stepan.

…not sure how much to expect from a 26-year old who wasn't good enough to keep a roster spot on THREE separate AHL teams last season. Having said that, as I've noted all offseason, you can never have enough defensive depth. Who knows, maybe the guy is a late bloomer.

In other prospect news, Russian free agent forward Sergey Tolchinsky, who turned heads at the Rangers prospect camp last month and committed to play on the Rangers Traverse City team in September, agreed to terms with the Carolina Hurricanes on a three-year, entry-level contract.

Tolchinsky, 18, played the 2012-13 season with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), notching 26 goals and 25 assists (51 points), and posting a plus-8 plus/minus rating in 62 regular-season games. He finished the season ranked second in goals and tied for third in points among OHL rookies.

…at just 5' 8", I was never excited about the Rangers interest in Tolchinsky, but his skill set is undeniable and I was looking forward to possibly watching him develop in the system.

…with the Hurricanes now in the Rangers division, let's hope not signing this kid doesn't come back to bite the Blueshirts.
