Rangers a Favorite for Free Agent UMass Defenseman

Steve Zipay at Newsday reports that the Rangers and Predators are top two destinations favored by Conor Allen, a junior, left-handed defenseman who is leaving UMass.

The 6' 1", 205lb Allen has 14g, 25a in three years at UMass. Zipay said he projects to be a third pair defenseman in the NHL.

Here's a recap of Allen's junior season from UMass Hockey blog Fear the Triangle

"I thought Allen was consistently one of the best UMass players on the ice this season and even one of the better defenseman in the conference.  Defensively, he was easily the best player for UMass.  He more than doubled his blocked shots from last year from 24 to a team high 57.  He doubled his assists from last year, from 7 to 14, and added 5 goals of his own.  Looking ahead to next year people are going to talk a lot about Mike Pereira and Branden Gracel returning, but Allen is just as important to next year’s squad as those two."

…you can never have enough defensive depth, so why not? Rangers are a little thin in the defensive prospects department (no one other than McIlrath & Skjei) right now, so Allen would be a welcome addition.
