Now that Henrik Lundqvist's contract situation is out of the way, Glen Sather only has 13 more free agents (UFA & RFA) to address.
The next situation likely tackled is Ryan Callahan (UFA, $4.275M per currently), who recently admitted nothing was going on with contract negotiations right now (via New York Post)…
“This is where I want to be, obviously. But like I said, I’m not going to air it out in the media about my contract and what’s going on. Just go about my business on the ice, and that stuff takes care of itself.”
…similar to Lundqvist, I have real concerns about signing Callahan long term. Especially with his history of injury. Callahan will likely be looking for six years, but I'd much rather see four at the most. Ultimately, I think it ends the way Lundqvist's negotiations did and both sides compromise with a five year deal in the $5.5 million dollar range.
…the Ludnqvist contract, to me, is a strong statement that the Rangers organization still believes in the core of the team, so I don't think there's anyway Sather allows Callahan to walk and will probably end up overpaying for his injury-prone Captain.
Meanwhile, Dan Girardi, also a UFA making $3.325M per, refused to discuss his contract situation after the Lundqvist signing, while Anton Stralman (UFA, $1.7M per) does not expect that his contract will be addressed until the offseason.
…i can't believe I'm saying this, but with the way these two defensemen have been playing this season, I wouldn't be shocked to see Stralman re-signed and Girardi allowed to walk. For whatever the reason, Girardi has not been able to find a comfort level in AV's defensive scheme, while Stralman has thrived.
…Stralman, although he will command a raise, will also come a lot cheaper than Girardi, who could be pursued hard by his former coach's team in Vancouver.
Other UFAs include Brian Boyle, Taylor Pyatt, Beniot Pouliot and Dominic Moore.
The RFAs are Derrick Brassard, Mats Zuccarello, Chris Kreider, Michael Del Zotto, Justin Falk and John Moore.
…it's funny, I can pretty much see all the UFAs gone, while all the RFAs, minus Del Zotto, coming back.
…having said that, I don't think all of them will still be on the Rangers roster by the end of the season (cough – Pyatt & Pouliot – cough).
