This weekend, there were reports that Toronto Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf is available for trade.
Leafs GM Dave Nonis has said he will trade anyone but hasn’t received calls on Phaneuf as of yet. Joe Yerdon at Pro Hockey Talk thinks that might change now that everyone knows he could be had.
The 28-year old Phaneuf, who is one of the most physical defenseman in the NHL, had 9g, 19a last season and has 184 (61g, 123a) career power play points. He's entering the final year of his contract that'll pay him $6.5 million this season.
Phanuef laid the fateful hit on Michael Sauer that likely ended his career.
…hey, Phaneuf is engaged to Avery's ex-girlfriend, why not join his ex-team?
…Phaneuf is not only in his prime, he's the intimidating presence on the blueline Rangers fans have been begging to see in a Blueshirt for years. He can also put up points on the power play as well as even strength. Plus, the fact that he's entering a contract year ensures he'll be extra motivated to play for one last big pay day before the end of his career.
…Phaneuf won't come cheap and the Rangers will obviously have to buyout Richards to be able to keep him under the cap. With Phanuef entering his final year, he'd basically be a rental (not sure the Rangers could afford him if he had a huge season), so I'd hate to see the Rangers give up too much. Wonder if Toronto would be willing to accept a package centering around Del Zotto, who is from the Toronto area.
…and for those of you who don't want to see him on the Rangers because of what he did to Sauer, get over it. The hit was 100% clean and it the reason for the concussion was because his chin strap wasn't tight enough, so his helmet popped off and his head hit the dasher.
