Lundqvist Extension Talks Begin; Richards Decision Coming Shortly; No Commitment on Clowe

Bob McKenzie at TSN reports that the Rangers and Henrik Lundqvist's representatives were to begin contract extension talks last night.

…i think if Lundqvist signs a contract with the Rangers, he wants it to be long term. No way he's going to sign a five-year deal that would put him into free agency during his late 30s and likely the beginning of his decline. He'd lose a ton of money.

…having said that, I'd hate to see Sather just roll over for the guy. Giving him a 8-year, $80 million contract could really hamstring the Rangers capwise for years to come. There's been plenty of Cup winners recently with nothing more than above average goaltenders, so if Lundqvist is going to play hardball it might be time to seriously think about trading the guy (gasp!) for a huge package that could set the Rangers up for success for years to come.

Meanwhile, Glen Sather told Steve Zipay at Newsday that a decision on Brad Richards is "coming shortly."

…of course it is, the deadline to use the compliance buyout is Thursday night.

…getting a weird feeling that he's staying for another year. Although, I'm starting to warm to the idea of Lecavalier in a Blueshirt.

Finally, Larry Brooks at the New York Post notes that the Rangers are not committed to re-signing impending free agent winger Ryan Clowe.

…that'll happen when a player sustains two concussions in less than a month.

…some of you have said you're not concerned about reoccuring concussions for Clowe, but because of his style of play I think it's a real risk bringing him back. And even if he decides to pull back on the physical play a bit, who the heck wants a "Clowe Light" on the team? One or two year deal at $2.5 – $3 million per tops.
