Arthur Staple at Newsday wonders with the Islanders losing defenseman Thomas Hickey to injury and the Rangers looking to move Michael Del Zotto whether a deal between the hated rivals could be worked out.
Staple adds that although the Islanders don't have a defenseman to send back in the deal (a rumored Sather requirement for trading Del Zotto), they do have a number of young forwards.
Staple also notes that Del Zotto is very tight with John Tavares, who he played with for three seasons of junior hockey.
…i would never, ever, ever endorse this trade. I would much rather Del Zotto suck for the Rangers than have him figure it out and succeed with the Islanders.
…i know the Rangers already have 20 centers on the team, but if I had to pick one Islander (other than Tavares) to come back in a Del Zotto deal it would be Frans Neilson. Big body, with soft hands and a very cap friendly hit of $2.75M per. He's had injury issues throughout his career, but he looks like at age 29 he's finally turning the corner.
