Backstrom: We Were the Better Team Last Year

And the first utterance of bulletin board fodder is officially out there, as the Capitals' Nicklas Backstrom apparently felt that despite losing to the Rangers in the playoffs last year, Washington was the superior team (via Washington Post)…

“Obviously we felt we were better for seven games last year. We know they’re a good team and we played them before. It’s going to be a tough battle. I think we’re ready and they’re probably ready as well. It’s going to be, I think, a long series.”

…sorry Nick, but if you really were the better team, you wouldn't have let this happen…

Here's what else Capital players said about the series…

Eric Fehr…

“They’re a real physical team. It’s going to be a tough opponent. Obviously, we have a little bit of history with them. We’ve played them a number of times. It’s going to be a man’s series, no question. They’ve got a lot of big guys and they like to play physical. It’s a good challenge for us.”

Karl Azner (via Blueshirts United)…

“The teams are a lot different than they were last year. But like we’ve said also, we don’t care too much about the other team. We’re happy with what we’re doing. The Rangers will be tough to play. I think they’re built for the playoffs. If they can stay healthy they’re definitely a contender, I think.”

…you can tell that the Capitals respect the Rangers and are ready for a war. Which they should be because, I can't say it enough, this has all the makings of another epic series between these two former Patrick Division rivals.

…the high flying Capitals offense vs. the Rangers shutdown defense. And you know what they say, the offense may get the glory, but defense wins championships. Especially when you have Henrik Lundqvist back there.
