One way we all expect the Rangers to clear out cap space to re-sign Derek Stepan is by sending Arron Asham and Darroll Powe down to the Wolfpack. That move would give the Blueshirts almost $2 million in additional cap space.
However, in a recent interview with Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record, assistant GM Jeff Gorton said Asham and Powe will both be at training camp competing for spots despite being put on waivers this summer. Both cleared.
They would have to clear waivers again if the Rangers want to re-assign them to Hartford.
Gorton also noted that the Rangers would prefer not to exceed the salary cap by the 10% they are allowed during the summer.
…i've got to assume Gorton is trying not to tip the Rangers hand while they're still in negotiations with Stepan because with those two on the roster there is only $2.1 million to re-sign the free agent center. Which is not enough even for a bridge deal. Unless of course a trade is on the horizon.
…also, Gorton probably didn't want to publicly embarrass Asham and Powe by admitting neither of them had a chance of making the roster.
