Torts Is Anxious to See Del Zotto in Camp

delzottoIn Jesse Spector’s season review on Michael Del Zotto at The Blueshirts Blog he has this quote from John Tortorella…

“There’s a number of building blocks with Michael,” John Tortorella said. “A number of defensemen that had pretty good rookie years ended up taking a step backwards. You accept that, and maybe change some things. I don’t want to get into specifics, but something has to change, and you embrace the process. It’s not an easy position to play. I’m really anxious to see Michael – first of all, get him healthy – and I’m really anxious to see him in camp. He’s gonna get a fair whack at it in camp. I think there’s mental maturity that comes involved, and as each player goes through the ups and downs, as Michael has done, I think he’ll mature.”

…Del Zotto has all the tools to be a top offensive defenseman in the NHL as well as the Rangers power play quarterback of the future, but he’s got to figure it out between the ears. He’s still just 20 years of age and has plenty of time to develop. So I’m not going to be too concerned if he starts the season with the Whale. Especially with the effect both J.J. Daigneault and Wade Reddem, yes Wade Redden, have had mentoring the Rangers young defensemen.

…i know a lot of Rangers fans want to give up on Del Zotto, but it doesn’t make much sense to dump a highly regarded youngster for maturity issues. Oh wait, the Rangers just did that. ;)
