Sather Won’t Panic at Deadline

satherGlen Sather tells Arthur Staple at Newsday that even with the trade deadline two weeks away, this is no time to break up the Rangers young group that’s been going through some growing pains lately…

“Every team has issues, every team has ebbs and flows,” Sather said. “You can’t start panicking about all the things that happen.

“I think we can compete [in the playoffs]. It doesn’t mean we’re going to do anything [at the deadline] or not do anything. The whole goal this season has been to keep these young guys going as well as they can, to create a team that takes some ownership in itself. It took us a while to get to that stage, but we’re getting there.”

Larry Brooks at the New York Post adds that the Rangers won’t be in on Stephen Weiss or Jason Spezza, or any center with a contract that extends beyond this season, given that there is every reason to believe they will sign Brad Richards as a free agent this summer.

Brooks also says that there’s a longshot of longshots, that the Blueshirts go after Peter Forsberg.

…Sather has proved the last two deadlines that he’s beyond the quick fixes that defined the early years of his tenure with the Rangers. I’ve been saying it all year, but I truly feel Sather finally gets it and I’d be shocked if he gave up a young player for Kaberle, McCabe or any other big time defenseman we’ve heard to be linked to the Rangers.

…Forsberg? C’mon Larry give me a break.
