Richards: There’s Been No Decisions

richardsAfter an appearance on NHL Live at the league’s store in midtown Manhattan yesterday, Brad Richards told Newsday’s Arthur Staple this about his upcoming free agency…

“There’s been no decisions, no real thoughts on anything yet,” Richards said. “I’m just trying to get my body back to where it usually is conditioningwise right now and keep doing what I’ve been doing.”

The 31-year-old center also said this about his relationship with John Tortorella (they won a Cup in Tampas in 2004)…

“You have that forever,” Richards said of the championship bond. “We had Torts there for eight years. That’s pretty rare in this day and age . . . He taught us how to be professionals.”

Richards had 28g, 49a in 72 games this year. He missed 10 towards the end of the season with a concussion.

Richards, who just finished a five-year deal that paid him $7.8 million last season, is said to be looking for a long term deal.

…a lot of people feel that when the Stars finalize their new ownership it is a foregone conclusion that Richards is staying. I’m not so sure. I think that championship bond he has with Torts is a huge feather in the Rangers cap.

…having said that I’d hate to see the Rangers commit more than four years to a 31-year-old coming off a concussion. Although if you saw Gaborik’s goal at the Worlds yesterday it’s amazing what playing with some highly skilled players will do for your game. Pairing the two of them would give the Rangers one of the best center-wing tandams in the league.
