Revisiting Gaborik for Dan Boyle

John Buccigross at ESPN, revisits the Marian Gaborik for Dan Boyle trade rumor he started last month in his recent Mother of All Mailbags column

“Trading Gaborik for Boyle would deepen the Rangers’ defense and give them a top-six forward group of Brad Richards, Nash, Ryan Callahan, Derek Stepan, Carl Hagelin and Kreider, which is pretty strong if Kreider develops into the NHL force he appears destined to become. Keeping Gaborik would give them a little more depth and allow one of those players to drop to the third line. I suppose that would be Kreider, but he looked like one of the Rangers’ better players in the playoffs and is a horse who needs to run and play with good players. It will be interesting to see. The scoring really drops off after the first two lines for the Rangers.”

…Buccigross has been hit or miss on his rumors, so take this with a grain of salt.

…as far as the benefit of the trade for the Rangers, I hate it. Aging (36-years old), over the hill defenseman for (when healthy), one of the premiere goal scorers in the league? No thank you. While the Rangers blueline could use some offense, I’d rather take a chance on Del Zotto stepping up this season than trading away a need (goal scoring) for a defenseman who had three power play goals last season.
