Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun reports that Wade Redden is expected to be among those players blocked from going to training camp when the lockout takes effect tonight at 11:59 p.m…
“It’ll be a money-saving move by the Rangers. Redden, 35, is scheduled to make $5 million this season with a salary-cap hit of $6.5 million on a deal that doesn’t expire until the end of the 2013-14 season.”
…wow, kick a guy when he’s down. Assuming the Rangers aren’t going to put Redden through waivers so they can pay him while playing for the Whale.
If the new CBA includes provision for a one-time amnesty buyout, the Rangers could use it to release Redden from his contract. Redden would still get the money owed him but it would not affect the team’s salary cap.
…Redden’s salary doesn’t affect the Rangers cap playing for the Whale, so why would they use the amnesty buyout if they still have to pay him?
