Rangers Seeking Second Pairing Defenseman?

Rangers beat writer Jim Cerny hosts weekly chats on Blueshirts United and of course the topic of defense came up. With Erixon’s departure and Michael Sauer’s status still up in the air, the Rangers are still lacking a defenseman (unless Tortorella is happy to play Stu Bickel 3 minutes per game for the entire season). Per Cerny, the Rangers are attempting to solve that issue via trade. From the chat:

“Rangers have been fishing, just looking into if they can trade for a second pair d-man who can move the puck and help the power play, but if they can not find a fit for that role, Campoli/Eminger, someone of that nature is a strong signing possibility”

Though the Nash trade obviously resulted in the Rangers losing some top assets, they still have a number of prospects and draft picks to move in a potential deal. Outside of Jay Bouwmeester, whose cap hit is probably too much for Sather’s liking and would require a big return, there has not been much speculation as far as defensemen available for trade. Glen Sather has done some wonderful things on the trade market before so it’s always a possibility, but I do believe that he is ultimately going to have to resort to bringing back a guy like Eminger or picking up someone else such as Campoli or Jurcina from the bargain bin.
