Rangers Kicking Tires on Gonchar?

I’m going to preference this by saying I rarely, if ever, post rumors from questionable sources, but Travis Yost over at the Ottawa Senators blog at HockeyBuzz is saying he’s hearing from a source that has been very reliable for him in the past that the Rangers have shown interest in Senators defenseman Sergie Gonchar.

Yost describes a number senarios that have been discussed between the two teams…

“One avenue discussed – the recently returned Vinny Prospal, another smaller contract, and a high draft pick. Another looked at – Chris Drury’s bloated contract for another year and a half (7.5M through ’11-’12, NMC!) paired with Ethan Werek (C) (or) Ryan McDonagh(D). Word is the Senators would much rather have talent up front, especially on the wings, considering their plethora of defensive prospects. Ottawa’s also showing heavy interest in the talented two-way winger Ryan Callahan, but doesn’t sound like New York’s ready to budge on that quite yet. He’s an RFA at the end of the season, though, so anything’s possible, especially considering the fact that Dubinsky’s due a new contract as well.”

Yost adds that the Senators have also asked about Dan Girardi.

Gonchar, who still has two more years left on his contract at $5.5 million, has 6g, 16a and is a -17 this season.

…i posted this more for conversation than accuracy. My question is would you be willing to take on an extra year of the 35-year-old Gonchar at $5.5 million to get Drury’s $7.5 million off the books next year? And to make this even less likely, Drury would have to waive his NMC to go to Ottawa.

…my answer and I think all of yours would be an emphatic NO!!!!!!! Could you imagine the albatross Gonchar’s contract would be that final year? Unless the Rangers decided to Redden him to the CT Whale, in which case it wouldn’t be so bad. But a look at Gonchar’s numbers makes you wonder how anyone in their right mind could think this guy would help the Rangers power play.

…and who’s playing time gets cut the next few years to bring him in? The more I analyse this the less I wish I posted it. But I’ve written this much and I’m not deleting it.
