Rangers Interested in a Defenseman; Possible NHL Return for Jagr (Updated)

kaberleUpdate, 9:45 a.m.:
Arthur Staple at Newsday says the Rangers are still interested in bringing back Fedot Tyutin. Although it’s not likely that something will happen.

Original Post:
Pierre LeBrun at ESPN.com reports that because of the Rangers’ power play stuggles they are likely to be interested in a veteran point man such as Tomas Kaberle (TOR), Bryan McCabe (FLA) or Sheldon Souray (EDM).

- Kaberle, final year of a contract that pays him $4.25 million this year, has 2g, 30a including 20 power play points (all assists).

- McCabe, a UFA on July 1 ($5.7 million this year), is still injured and began off-ice workouts last week. It’s still not clear when he’ll begin to skate.

- Souray is currently playing in the AHL and has another year on his contract at $5.4 million per. However, Rangers could claim Souray off re-entry waivers for half the price.

…Kaberle is the only one that sounds even remotely attractive.

…Torts reiterated yesterday that the Rangers are committed to youth, so bringing any of these three in would be very hypocritical. Who would they replace? Del Zotto? Who Torts said they are committed to developing in the NHL. Sauer? McD? I will be very upset if a young player loses playing time because of a move for one of these three.

…the Rangers need to forget about instant gratification and think long term with this team. I know the defense is young and will make mistakes, but the playing experience they’ll get this year will only make them better long term.

LeBrun also reports that Jaromir Jagr is open to returning to the NHL after his KHL contract expires at the end of the season. Jagr stressed that he would only come back to a team that would contend for a Stanley Cup.
