Back in August, Larry Brooks of the New York Post reported that the Rangers had offered Michael Del Zotto a contract in the $2.2 – $2.5 million per year range. However, Del Zotto's agent Mark Guy is now saying that report was false (via New York Times)…
“I won’t get into what the negotiations were at prior to the lockout,” Guy said. “We never do, but I can tell you that the previous reports of an offer in that range are erroneous.”
…if the Rangers offer was below $2 million per year then I owe Del Zotto a huge apology because he is definitely worth more than that. Don't blame him for holding out for more.
As far as the reason Del Zotto decided to sign with Rapperswil-Jona Lakers of the Swiss league after initially stated he wouldn't play overseas, his agent notes…
“He is simply going to play in order to stay in ice shape and get game competition during the lockout.”
Guy adds that Del Zotto’s signing with Rapperswil-Jona has no bearing on his contract situation with the Rangers.
…while he's taking a huge chance playing without a NHL contract, he's a hockey player. Can't imagine that he's enjoying doing nothing but practicing.
