While all the talk this offseason has been about which prospect is going to win the final Rangers line-up spot with Marian Gaborik out until November, Bruce Berlet at The Howlings says Kris Newbury is a player who should get a long look during camp.
Here’s Newbury on the opportunity with players such as Brandon Dubinsky and Artem Anisimov departed…
“It might help a bit, but you still have to go in and be at the top of your game and play your best to have a shot at any NHL club. As long as I do that – if there’s camp – then hopefully I’ll have a good shot.”
Newbury, who signed a new two-year deal this offseason, was tied for the CT Whale lead in goals with 25 last season.
…Newbury could have the camp of his life and I still don’t see him cracking the top 12. The fourth line is pretty much set with Rupp-Halpern-Asham and no way he’s worthy of making one of the top three lines.
…to me Newbury is the perfect 13th or 14th forward. Team guy, who could succeed in a spot start as his gritty game fits nicely into Torts system.
Speaking of players trying to make the Rangers roster out of camp, Christian Thomas made a nice impression during the BioSteel Cup round robin tournament yesterday on the final day of the camp…
