Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun reports that if the Rangers are going to deal for Columbus’ Rick Nash, and sources say Glen Sather is interested, the Blue Jackets will demand Brandon Dubinsky, Chris Kreider and a No. 1 pick.
Nash, who’s topped 40 goals twice in his career, has just 18g, 20a this season. Nash is under contract until 2018 with a $7.8 million yearly cap hit.
…apparently the Blue Jackets GM has mental issues if he thinks the Sather would agree to that deal.
…while it would be tough, I’d be ok with Dubinsky being part of a deal for Nash, but as soon as Kreider’s name is involved this deal would be dead on arrival for me. Especially after what I witnessed from the Rangers #1 prospect Friday night.
…Nash is an incredible talent, but his numbers have been on the decline. And that contract will destroy the Rangers ability to re-sign key players (McD, MDZ, Callahan) down the road. This has all the makings of a “what was Sather thinking” trade for the Rangers.
To add credibility to this rumor, Tim Panaccio at CSN Philly reports Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson attended yesterday’s Rangers/Flyers game. Although Panaccio wonders if Howson is there to gauge the Rangers interest in Jeff Carter.
…i’ve seen numerous Rangers fans want Carter. Not sure what the appeal is for an injury prone player who is under contract until 2019 ($5.27 million per).
Meanwhile, Pat Leonard at the Daily News lists a few players he thinks the Rangers could be interested at the trade deadline including Ray Whitney, Pavel Kubina, Hal Gill and Brad Boyes.
…it’s funny, the guy I like the most out of that list is the guy struggling the most in Boyes. He has just three goals this season, but showed in St. Louis that he can score (43 goals in 07-08). Rangers should be able to get him cheap and his contract ($4 million per) ends after this season.
…after the Rangers power play performance last night, not sure a guy like Kubina is necessary.
Leonard adds that Glen Sather is not expected to break the bank since the Rangers, who have great chemistry, appear built for long-term success.
