Messier Talks Lockout; No MSG Layoffs

Mark Spector at SportsNet was able to speak with Mark Messier about the lockout…

“We’ve got to figure out a way to bridge the gap in the trust area,” Messier said. “There’s been a big problem with that for a long time. It just seems like every time we build some good momentum, we get back to this.

“There has to be a partnership — everyone knows it,” Messier added. “In order to have that viable working relationship, there has to be trust on both sides — so you can even begin to negotiate.”

…Messier knows all about NHL lockouts destroying momentum in the NHL as the work stoppage after the Rangers Stanley Cup in 1994 set the league back 20 years right when it was at the peak of popularity.

…also the 2004-05 lockout all but guaranteed Messier’s retirement.

Speaking of the lockout, Katie Strang at ESPN reports there will be no new CBA talks this week…

“Although Daly and PA special counsel Steve Fehr have communicated frequently in recent weeks — the two spoke over the phone Wednesday — the NHL and NHLPA have not had any formal negotiations since last Wednesday.”

…nobody wants to play hockey more than Bettman. Yeah right.

…maybe the Dolans will spare the fans as well by dropping ticket prices coming out of the lockout if any games are missed.

Meanwhile, Rick Carpiniello at the Rangers Report reminds us that Rangers training camp was supposed to start today.
