Blackburn Has Moved On

Patrick Cwiklinski at The Hockey News catches up with Rangers 2001 first round pick Dan Blackburn, who had to retire from hockey in 2005 due to a weightlifting accident in the summer of 2003 that resulted in a nerve injury to his catching hand.

After retirement, Blackburn reinvented himself and attended Arizona State University where he did work for the Goaltending Development Institute before settling in Dallas where he currently works in real estate.

“I wasn’t going to be getting better,” Blackburn said. “For me it was closure just to be able to move on and it was just mentally incredibly taxing sitting around and not being part of the team and sort of being on your own all the time so I was happy to be able to move on finally.”

…i’m sure I’m not the only one, but I was a huge Blackburn fan when he came up and it’s so upsetting to see what happened to him. You have to wonder how the Rangers goaltending situation would have played out if Blackburn didn’t get hurt. Would Hank ever have gotten a chance? Would he have been traded? Would he have beaten out Blackburn? Either way would have been interesting.
