MSG Inspires Opponents

msgcrowdJamie McLennan at The Hockey News gives his toughest NHL buildings to play in, including Madison Square Garden which he says this about…

“Then you have the fans. They are die hard, vocal and can be downright mean at the best of the times. That being said, for an opposing player going into this building, it’s a very exciting atmosphere. There is nothing in this world like skating onto the ice at the Garden with “the animals” hanging on the glass, chirping you in warmup and letting you know “You suck!” with some profanities mixed in. That made you nervous, but inspired you to have your best game.”

…i think McLennan took too many pucks to the head in his career because we all know that the only people who can afford tickets by the glass are the suits who are probably yelling “You suck” to their stock broker on their cell phone.

…in all seriousness, what McLennan is saying makes a lot of sense and is why the Rangers probably struggle at home so often (this year not withstanding). Opponents come to MSG wanting to perform on the big stage and always give the Rangers their best game. It’s why you see players like Crosby, Ovechkin and Iginla take their games to another level at MSG. It’s the crowd, the history and the city. There is no other arena in the world like Madison Square Garden. Although the renovations are a pain in the ass right now. lol
