Hank, Richards Media Day Recap

Yesterday Henrik Lundqvist and Brad Richards joined other NHL stars for a media day in New York. Here are some of the highlights:

Richards tells ESPN.com this about his new team…

“It’s a good young team,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s the same as Tampa, but I’m probably saying that more because Torts took over a young team and kind of grew it, but it’s the same feel.

“I don’t feel old and don’t want to say I’m old, but [there are] a lot of young enthusiastic kids that you can tell they’re all really close to each other. It’s a good, close-knit locker room and [we have a] great goaltender and it’s kind of similar. Hopefully we just keep improving the way we did when I played in Tampa.”

While Lundqvist adds this about his new teammate…

“I was excited. I think management’s done a great job of keeping the core from last year. And now we added a little edge to the team, a high-skill player, and I think Brad is going to play a big role for us this year. When I heard he signed, I think everybody on the team was excited that he picked us because he had a few options. It’s going to be exciting to see how he fits in.”

Lundqvist adds this on how he acclimated himself to New York City (via NHL.com)…

“My first year I lived outside the city and my focus was just playing hockey. I left everything in Sweden, all my friends and family. So the first year you just focus on hockey. Then you try to build your life here. It probably took me two or three years before I felt like I was coming home. It’s a great feeling when you feel that. My life is here, my friends are here. But it takes a lot to build that up.”

Here’s video of Richards during a Q&A with fans at the NHL store in Manhattan…

Meanwhile, after the NHL media day the Rangers held a “Fashion Night Out” event also at the NHL store.

Here’s a pic of Derek Stepan and Erik Christensen working the cash registers…
