Callahan Has Broken Ankle (Updated)

Update, 2:34 p.m.:
Tortorella post practice presser (via The Blueshirts Blog)…

Update, 2:07 p.m.:
Jimmy Murphy at ESPN Boston reports that Zdeno Chara was really upset that his shot broke a bone in Ryan Callahan’s leg. He had tremendous praise for Callahan’s grit and passion.

…obviously no anomosity towards Chara. He was shooting the puck towards the net not at Callahan.

Update, 1:56 p.m.:
Rangers officially calling Callahan injury a fracture of the leg.

Update, 1:41 p.m.:
Drury will begin practicing with the team tomorrow and Matt Gilroy will move to wing.

Torts says calling up Mats Zuccarello was not considered.

Torts on moving Gilroy to wing

“gives us some flexibility with having a 7th D in there”

Update, 1:38 p.m.:
Andrew Gross reports that the official report on Callahan is a non-surgical broken ankle and is out indefinitely. “It’s long-term,” Tortorella says.

Update, 1:29 p.m.:
Drury on loss of Cally

“Does all the little things, does all the big things. Going to be a big loss.”

…while Callahan cannot be replaced, this Rangers team has stepped up in the face of adversity all year and I fully expect them to do the same now.

Update, 1:26 p.m.:
No official word from team but Prust, Stepan, Gaborik, Drury all talk to Andrew Gross about what a big loss Callahan is.

Update, 1:05 p.m.:
Rangers were 10-7-2 without Callahan when he broke his hand in December.

Update, 12:53 p.m.:
Gross reports that the Rangers are sending Kris Newbury back to the Whale and may try Matt Gilroy on the wing.

…sure the playoffs are as good a time as any to try and convert a defenseman into a winger. That’s called sarcasm folks.

Update, 12:36 p.m.:
Bob McKenzie at TSN, who is never wrong, says broken ankle for Callahan.

…this pretty much confirms our worst fears.

Update, 12:29 p.m.:
Michael Sauer discusses Callahan and Boyle blocking Chara’s shots after the game last night (via Slap Shots)

Update, 12:26 p.m.:
Chris Drury one of 12 Rangers on the ice for optional practice this morning.

…with Callahan possibly done for the year, Drury becomes an important piece moving forward.

Update, 12:11 p.m.:
Jim Cerny reports word coming shortly on Callahan from Rangers.

Update, 12:03 p.m.:
Jesse Spector says nothing has been confirmed by the Rangers. While WFAN says they are reporting based on a source.

Original Post:
I’ve been holding on to this until a credible source confirmed. Unfortunately, Andrew Gross just tweeted that Ryan Callahan broken ankle rumor may be accurate. Also hearing WFAN is reporting a broken ankle.

The assumption is it happened while blocking a Zdeno Chara shot late in the third period.

…devastating.
