Pierre LeBrun at ESPN.com reports that the Rangers’ interest in Brad Richards (set to be an unrestricted free agent July 1) is serious enough that they’re willing to pony up assets before the Feb. 28 trade deadline to make sure he doesn’t go elsewhere should the Dallas Stars decide to put him on the market.
LeBrun adds that Richards, who has a no movement clause, could have interest in gong to the Rangers because of his past relationship with John Tortorella.
…if Sather gives up a big prospect (McD or Valentenko) as well as one of the team’s young NHLers (Dubinsky or Callahan), I might stop the blog.
…listen, Richards is a stud player, but I’d hate to see the Rangers mortgage their future for this guy. I thought those days were over.
Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun adds that the Rangers are the top contender to land Richards.
Meanwhile, Larry Brooks at the New York Post writes that the Rangers don’t have the cap space to bring in Richards, unless they can do something with Matt Gilroy and Todd White’s salaries.
Brooks also contridicts LeBrun by stating Glen Sather is not willing to give up young assets for Richards.
…i really tried hard not to post another Richards to the Rangers story but it’s everywhere this morning.
…not sure who to believe about giving up assets for Richards. Brooks has been pretty reliable this year, plus he’s around the team everyday, so I’m going to go with his version.
